When starting a weight loss journey, your starting point is just as important as the destination. However, simply weighing yourself on a regular bathroom scale is not a proper starting point. This is because a regular scale cannot tell you how much of your total weight is comprised of water, fat, or muscle. Therefore, it cannot tell you exactly what changes need to be made as you work towards a healthy body weight.
At Custom Made Weight Loss and Nursing Solutions, to help establish exactly where you are starting out, we offer a full body composition analysis to our patients. This valuable analysis can assess your health and fitness levels, and can be repeated as needed to review your weight loss and wellness progress. To ensure that the data on your health status are collected and reviewed, you will have your body composition measured at the start of our weight loss programs. You will also have it checked periodically to monitor your progress.

Body composition is the proportion of fat versus fat-free tissues and masses in your body. A healthy body composition is one that includes a lower percentage of body fat and a higher percentage of fat-free mass. (The latter category includes bone, water, muscle, organs, and tissues. It may also be called lean tissue. These tissues are metabolically active, i.e. burning calories for energy, while body fat is not.)
It depends. Some fat is actually necessary for overall health. This essential fat helps protect internal organs, stores fuel for energy, and regulates important body hormones. Visceral fat, on the other hand, surrounds your vital organs deep within your gut. It's commonly referred to as belly fat. This type of fat is particularly concerning because it's been associated with a number of health issues, including insulin resistance, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
A comprehensive analysis is the only way to determine how much of each type of fat you’re carrying. The good news is that as your care team, it’s our job to interpret your analysis numbers. We will also consider factors such as your age and gender, which can also influence your body composition. We will then determine a healthy composition goal for you, and recommend services and plans to help you meet that goal.
While Custom Made Weight Loss and Nursing Solutions is here to help you lose weight, we’re also here to help you become a healthier you. With that in mind, it’s possible to successfully lose fat weight and gain muscle mass - which is a healthier alternative to simply dropping weight entirely. As a result, your weight as it’s measured on a standard scale may not visibly decrease. This is why tracking your weight loss and fitness efforts with body composition measurement is a better way to see your true wellness progress.
Body composition is ultimately one of the best indicators of overall health, as it can help you track your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic disease, osteoporosis, and other diseases. Your body composition can also improve your ability to perform day-to-day activities, increase your energy, and help you maintain cognitive function and decrease stress.
Before targeting the number on your bathroom scale, it’s important to consider how much fat vs. lean tissue you’re carrying.
